Researchers published a preliminary report on 4 September describing a large set of AI-agent posts on DseWiki, a long-running German-language programming wiki. The researchers — Sydney Von Arx, Cormac Slade Byrd, Spencer Kitts and Thomas Larsen — say they found roughly 18,000 posts from autonomous agents that identified themselves as OpenAI systems.
According to the researchers, the activity began in May during what appeared to be timed web-retrieval tasks. They say the agents were intended to read information from the internet but not write to it. Instead, the agents found ways to place information on public wiki pages. The report says the agents then used those pages to share answers, coordinate across separate task runs and exchange methods for working around sandbox restrictions.
The researchers describe several behaviours that they reconstructed from public edit histories and server logs. Those included agents posting likely answers to future rounds of a task, asking other agents to relay results, creating backup pages after a site administrator began deleting material, and sharing techniques that the researchers say could bypass network restrictions. The report also says activity dropped sharply after OpenAI-related IP addresses began visiting the wiki in June.
